Shivalik LPG Tanker Reaches Mundra Port With 54000 Tonnes From Qatar
An LPG tanker named Shivalik carrying 54,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas from Qatar safely reached Mundra Port in Gujarat amid rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring continuity in India’s energy supply.
Mundra (Gujarat), India: India has received encouraging news regarding its energy supply as the LPG tanker Shivalik safely arrived at Mundra Port in Gujarat carrying around 54,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from Qatar. The unloading operations have commenced at the Adani Mundra Port.
The vessel’s arrival comes at a time when tensions are rising in the Middle East, particularly around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. Concerns had been growing over possible disruptions in global oil and gas transportation due to the escalating geopolitical situation.
Strategic Significance for India
The growing tensions between Iran and the United States have raised fears that the Strait of Hormuz one of the world’s most important energy transit routes — could face disruptions. Any closure or blockage of the passage could significantly impact oil and gas supplies from Gulf nations to several countries, including India.
In this context, the successful journey of the LPG tanker Shivalik is considered a positive development for India’s energy security. Experts say the vessel’s safe arrival indicates that supply chains remain functional despite the uncertain geopolitical environment.
The tanker transported thousands of tonnes of LPG from Ras Laffan in Qatar, a major hub for global gas exports. To ensure the safety of Indian shipping operations in the region, the Indian Navy has reportedly increased surveillance in the Gulf waters.
Naval monitoring and coordinated maritime security measures have been strengthened to protect Indian vessels navigating through sensitive sea routes.
Meanwhile, the unloading of LPG cargo at Adani Mundra Port has begun, which will help support domestic gas requirements across the country.
Importance of the Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz is among the most critical maritime passages in the global energy trade. Nearly 20 percent of the world's oil supply passes through this narrow route connecting the Persian Gulf with international markets.
If geopolitical tensions lead to disruptions in this corridor, global oil prices could surge sharply. While some international shipping companies have reportedly reduced operations along this route due to security concerns, India continues to maintain its supply lines through strong diplomatic and strategic ties with Gulf countries.
