Mamata Banerjee Slams SIR, Warns BJP That Touching Bengal Will Shake the Country

Mamata rally Bongaon news

Bongaon, West Bengal, India: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee strongly criticised the Centre and the Election Commission during a large public gathering in Bongaon on Tuesday, accusing them of rushing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. She alleged that the hurried process was intended to remove voters and influence election outcomes.

Mamata claimed that the National Democratic Alliance’s win in Bihar was linked to changes made during the voter list revision, saying the opposition there failed to recognise what she described as the BJP’s strategy. “Elections took place in Bihar, and the opposition could not understand the BJP’s plan. But we are aware of their tactics. Such things will not work in Bengal. If they try to interfere with Bengal, the entire country will feel the impact,” she said.

She further alleged that the SIR process was troubling Bangladeshi Hindu communities and claimed that several deaths had occurred due to the confusion created by the revision. Mamata also accused the BJP of using Artificial Intelligence to create duplicate voters, describing it as part of a larger plan.

The Chief Minister warned that if voters who have already participated in elections are suddenly removed from the rolls, then the legitimacy of the government elected through those votes must also be questioned. “If you try to remove names hurriedly, we will not spare the BJP. The current government at the Centre was elected through the same voter list in 2024. As long as I am here, no one will be allowed to remove genuine voters,” she declared.

Responding to allegations related to illegal infiltration, Mamata said that border management is fully handled by central agencies and questioned why she was being asked to justify issues related to national entry points. She pointed out that the Centre oversees border security, immigration, customs, rail and air security, and therefore it is their responsibility to curb infiltration.
