Mamata Banerjee Summoned by Supreme Court Over ED Probe Obstruction Allegations

Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata, West Bengal, India: Mamata Banerjee is now involved in proceedings before the Supreme Court of India. The apex court has put on hold three FIRs filed against officials of the Enforcement Directorate. These cases were registered by the state police, alleging that the ED officials overstepped their jurisdiction during an investigation. The Supreme Court has recently stayed these FIRs.

The court has also instructed the West Bengal government to secure and preserve all CCTV cameras and related footage from the IPAC office. In addition, it ordered that witnesses connected to the file theft matter be given adequate protection. The ED approached the Supreme Court claiming that there was interference during searches conducted at the office and residence of the IPAC director, allegedly involving the West Bengal Chief Minister.

Appearing on behalf of the ED, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that Mamata Banerjee and other officials allegedly seized mobile phones and key documents from ED personnel. He further claimed that the Bengal Police later erased CCTV recordings. Questioning her presence, Mehta asked why Mamata Banerjee needed to visit the I-PAC office.

The Supreme Court showed its dissatisfaction over the reported obstruction faced by the ED during the investigation. It has issued notices to Mamata Banerjee and the state police, asking them to submit their responses within two weeks.
