Nitish Kumar Rajya Sabha Entry: Bihar CM Likely to Resign, Successor Race Begins

Nitish Kumar Rajya Sabha Oath Ceremony 2026

In a significant development in Indian politics, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was sworn in as a member of the Rajya Sabha on Friday. The oath-taking ceremony was conducted in the presence of the Chairman of the Upper House, marking what is widely seen as a turning point in Bihar’s political landscape.

Nitish Kumar, one of Bihar’s longest-serving Chief Ministers, is now expected to transition into national politics. Sources indicate that he may step down from his post as Chief Minister within the next few days, with April 13 or 14 being considered likely dates for his resignation.

The development has triggered intense speculation over the next leadership in Bihar. Several prominent names have emerged as potential successors, including Nityanand Rai, Minister of State for Home Affairs; Samrat Chaudhary, the current Deputy Chief Minister and BJP state president; and Dilip Kumar Jaiswal, Minister of State for Industries.

Additionally, there are indications that Nitish Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar, could soon be inducted into the state Cabinet, signaling a possible generational shift within the political framework.

With his entry into the Rajya Sabha, Nitish Kumar has achieved a rare milestone, having served in all four legislative bodies of India — the State Legislative Assembly, Legislative Council, Lok Sabha, and now the Rajya Sabha.

Despite his move to New Delhi, political observers believe Nitish Kumar will continue to wield considerable influence over Bihar politics. He is also expected to play a strategic role at the national level within the NDA alliance. Preparations are reportedly underway to allot him a Type-8 government residence in the national capital.
